Store worker allegedly gave himself a 99% discount on $118k’s worth of MacBooks and more

A Best Buy worker has been charged with fraud after he allegedly used his manager’s override code to give himself discounts of up to 99% on MacBook Pro models and other high-value electronics.

Police say the total value of the products “purchased” by the employee and his associates was more than $118,000 …

CW34 reports that the extended shopping spree lasted for several months.

A Palm Beach Gardens Best Buy employee is accused of a months-long fraud scheme that cost the store more than $118,000, police say. According to his probable cause affidavit, the investigation began in December 2024 when the store’s manager noticed irregular sales while reviewing inventory […]

Best Buy hired private investigators, who found Lettera conducted 97 discounted purchases for himself, totaling $81,717, and 52 additional transactions for others, adding $36,573 in losses.

Police recovered several MacBook Pro models pawned by Lettera, citing local pawn store records and the employee’s thumbprint as evidence. The pawnshops cooperated with police in their investigation.

ArsTechnica reports that employee theft has become a bigger priority for investigations by retail chains, with high turnover of staff one of the factors in low detection rates. Another example cited in the report is a different Best Buy employee who allowed shoplifters to leave the store without paying for well over 100 products, including AirPods and Beats headphones.
