Is Apple discontinuing the cosmic orange iPhone color this year?

Earlier today, we learned more details about the color lineup for this year’s iPhone 18 Pro. That report has naturally raised many questions about the fate of the popular cosmic orange iPhone 17 Pro color …

Will iPhone 18 Pro be available in cosmic orange?

The iPhone 17 Pro is unique for multiple reasons, including its new camera plateau and its two-tone back design. The biggest differentiator, though, is the cosmic orange, which marks the first time a “Pro” model iPhone has been available in a bright, bold color.

All indications are that cosmic orange has been a huge success for the iPhone 17 Pro.

A report from the Financial Times in February said the cosmic orange color is particularly popular in China, where shoppers refer to the color as “Hermès orange” rather than Apple’s official name.

So, what does this mean for the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max launching later this year?

In February, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman wrote that he “wouldn’t be surprised” if Apple kept cosmic orange around due to its popularity.

Today, however, a report from Macworld said that a new “dark cherry” color will replace cosmic orange in the iPhone 18 Pro lineup.

While Dark Cherry color won’t be as bright and striking as Cosmic Orange in person, it will still be unique enough to distinguish it as the new iPhone 18 Pro. As always, Apple is expected to discontinue the current lineup of colors, including Cosmic Orange.

According to Macworld, the iPhone 18 Pro will be available in light blue, dark cherry, silver, and dark gray.

9to5Mac’s Take

To me, it makes perfect sense for Apple to retire cosmic orange with the iPhone 18 Pro this year. I think Apple makes many of its iPhone color decisions based on fashion trends and the fashion industry.

In the fashion world, colors come and go in cycles. What makes cosmic orange so special for the iPhone 17 Pro is that it’s unique. If it were to persist through multiple generations, it would lose some of that allure. As the kids say, it could even become “stale.”

Historically, Apple has swapped out each year’s “unique” color when a new phone is released. iPhone 12 Pro was available in pacific blue, iPhone 13 Pro was available in a sierra blue and later alpine green, and iPhone 14 Pro was available in deep purple.

What do you think? Will the iPhone 18 Pro be available in cosmic orange? Should it be? Let us know down in the comments.
