WhatsApp testing multi-chat AI summaries for unread messages

Meta is expanding its in-app AI-powered summaries feature on WhatsApp to include unread context across multiple chats. Here are the details.

WhatsApp to expand in-app AI summaries

As spotted by WABetaInfo, the latest TestFlight build of WhatsApp includes references to a new feature that will let users view an AI-powered summary of unread messages across multiple chats.

Currently, the app offers an AI-powered summary of unread messages within each individual chat, with the entire summarization process being handled by WhatsApp’s Private Processing system.

Now, according to WABetaInfo, the app is working on “a unified unread chat summary feature,” which will add a “Get a summary” button at the top of the Chats tab when the “Unread” filter is selected.

From WABetaInfo:

As you can see from the attached image, WhatsApp is exploring the implementation of a feature designed to elaborate private chat summaries. Although this feature is currently under development and set for release in a future update, it already promises to make summarization more convenient than ever. At the moment, users in certain regions can generate message summaries by opening a conversation. Here, users can tap the button “summarize” to elaborate a concise summary. By reading a summary, users can easily understand the key points of a conversation since it condenses multiple messages into a concise overview. Private Processing generates a secure summary of unread messages. In particular, it processes the content in a way that preserves privacy, while still delivering a clear overview of the conversation.

WABetaInfo says the feature is under development for both iOS and Android versions of WhatsApp, which could indicate it won’t be long before it’s released, or at least made available to beta testers.
