Apple Wallet driver’s licenses coming to these states next

At WWDC 2021, Apple announced support for storing your driver’s license in Apple Wallet on iPhone. At the time, Apple touted this as the last step before you can be “fully free of your physical wallet.”

Here are the states where support for the Apple Wallet driver’s license feature is coming next …

Apple Wallet ID support

In the five years since Apple announced this feature, support has gradually expanded across the United States. Right now, iPhone and Apple Watch users in 14 states and Puerto Rico can add their driver’s license or state ID to Apple Wallet. You can view the full list here:

Where is the feature launching next? Here’s what we know right now.

The following seven states have confirmed their work on Apple Wallet driver’s license support, have been touted as a partner by Apple, and/or appeared in Apple code:

Meanwhile, the Secure Technology Alliance has been tracking the rollout of mobile driver’s license support across the US. Here are the states that have started exploring mobile ID support through legislation or studies and have not been referenced by Apple:

  • Indiana
  • Vermont
  • New Jersey
  • Florida
  • South Carolina
  • Tennessee
  • Missouri
  • Nevada
  • Wyoming

It’s important to remember that progress varies significantly from state to state. Just because a state is exploring or developing support for digital IDs doesn’t mean it will ultimately launch, let alone come to Apple Wallet.

Wrap up

As you can see, it’s still a rather scattershot rollout of driver’s license support in Apple Wallet across the United States.

However, you don’t have to wait for your state to support digital ID in Apple Wallet to try out the feature.

Last year, Apple launched a new Digital ID feature that is powered by your US passport. While it’s not your driver’s license, it’s a way to use your iPhone at TSA checkpoints at more than 250 airports in the United States.

Do you have your ID or driver’s license stored in Apple Wallet on your iPhone? Have you actually used it? Let us know down in the comments.
