Mozilla today announced new features to Firefox’s AI-powered Smart Window, which remains in beta. Here are the details.
Firefox’s Smart Window gets new features
A few months ago, when Mozilla first announced Smart Window, it described the feature as “a separate, optional window in Firefox where you can interact with an AI assistant of your choice while you browse,” adding that it offered “things like summarizing, comparing tabs, organizing info, or asking questions, all without leaving your flow.”
Since then, the company has been incorporating user feedback, and today announced a new set of features designed to “help people finish what they start online.”
Starting today, Firefox’s Smart Window will suggest groups for related tabs, which should help in those situations where researching a topic or planning an event can quickly get out of hand. One particularly useful addition is automatic duplicate detection, which lets users spot and close duplicate tabs with a click.
Smart Window now benefits from a new partnership between Mozilla and Exa, which was also announced today. Exa is an AI-focused search and web retrieval company, and its integration with Smart Window will allow it to “retrieve current web information and show the sources behind its response without taking you to a separate search results page,” says Mozilla.
Finally, Smart Window lets users input natural-language prompts such as “running shows I looked at last week,” and it promises to “show visual previews of pages in your browsing history, making it easier to spot the page you’re looking for among similar results without opening each one to figure out which is which.”
In its press release, Mozilla also announced what’s next for Smart Window:
Soon, Smart Window will be able to surface recent browsing journeys and pull together related tabs and history, giving you a starting point when you return to something you were working on. We’re also working on ways for Smart Window to use relevant information to help fill out online forms, so you don’t have to re-enter the same details again and again. You’ll stay in control of what Smart Window can access, including which tabs you choose to share with it.
