A recent report from Chinese outlet Jiemian News offers an update on iPhone Duo production, including how many units are being made, assembly troubles, and more.
Latest iPhone Duo report covers production struggles, target inventory, and more
iPhone Duo goes up for pre-order on October 16, just a little more than two weeks from now. And a recent report from Jiemian News provides the latest update on Apple’s production status.
We’ve seen reporting before that Apple’s foldable is having a slow ramp-up due to a complex assembly process.
Right now, iPhone Duo assembly yield is reportedly just over 60%. And per Jiemian, suppliers believe it could take another six months or more for production yields to reach a “mature” level.
That’s far below what would be expected for other models, but perhaps not surprising considering the Duo is packed with all-new product designs and components.
Per the report, Apple is targeting having 6-8 million iPhone Duo units ready to go for 2026. This compares to 20-30 million typical units for a flagship new Pro or Pro Max model.

I usually don’t mind buying first-gen products if they’re genuinely worth it. I’m about 50/50 on this one, but I’m excited because it’s something new. My biggest concern is whether the crease will hold up after 3,000–4,000 openings per month lol. But at the same time, you can’t always wait for the next generation product—life’s too short.
I played with the Samsung one in the store the other day, and honestly, the crease was pretty bad. The technology is still really cool, though, even if it’s definitely a niche market. I’m actually considering getting this one a few weeks after release. I’m down to go first-gen on this one—just not necessarily first-day. Funny enough, my favorite part is actually being able to have photos open next to messages and being able to drag pics over, I do this so much for work/personal and it's a pain on the iPhone.
With a starting price of $1,999 and unique form factor, iPhone Duo isn’t targeting as broad a set of users as models like iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max. The overall foldable market is still fairly niche, too.
If Apple sells anywhere near 8 million units before the end of 2026, that will no doubt be seen as a major win. But the iPhone Duo’s success will ultimately come down more to popularity over time. Will it be an early adopter model only, or prove a mass-market hit too?
A source told Jiemian that Apple so far has been unwilling to relax its strict quality standards for the iPhone Duo, thus leading to lower than expected yields. While that potentially will lead to shortages when the new model launches, I suspect anyone spending $2,000+ on an iPhone will want the highest quality product, so it’s not exactly bad news.
