Leak reveals new design details about Apple’s upcoming smart display

Apple is less than two weeks away from launching its new smart display, according to a new Bloomberg report. The report also adds details about the design of Apple’s long-awaited smart home hub.

Bloomberg reports that the home hub will have a 6-inch square display. The overall design is reminiscent of the iconic iMac G4, which featured a half-dome-shaped base with a metal arm holding up its display.

The device is said to be “about as thick as an iPhone” with quarter-inch, black bezels similar to older iPads. It has rounded corners with “no sharp edges,” Mark Gurman says.

Here are some more design details from the report:

It comes in Apple’s “standard gray aluminum finish” with a “rubberized bottom to help it stay on a table.”
It has a USB-C port for power and no built-in battery, so it must be connected to power at all times.
It sits on a “metal, round base with multiple rings of perforated speaker holes.”
The display connects to the base with a “polished metal arm.”
Users can tilt the display forward or backward.
There are no volume or power buttons.
There is a single front-facing FaceTime camera and no rear camera.

Bloomberg also says there’s a second version of the home hub that’s “designed to be mounted on a wall.” This version uses USB-C for power and has a “thin, square-shaped base beneath the display that houses the speakers and microphones.” The base reportedly “sits flat on the wall below the screen.”
