Apple launched iOS 27 on September 14, but the new OS version was initially minimized in Settings while iOS 26.7 was spotlighted as the recommended update. But now following the release of iOS 27.0.1, that has officially changed.
iPhones running iOS 26 will default to iOS 27.0.1 as next update

Over the last few years, Apple has started rolling out its major new iOS updates more gradually.
For example, while iOS 27 officially became available to all users on September 14, it wasn’t featured as the default, top-level update in the Settings app.
Instead, until very recently, users saw iOS 26.7 as the recommended update, while iOS 27 was minimized under a small ‘Also Available’ section in the Software Update screen.
Apple does this because inevitably, despite a months-long beta process, there are often new bugs that emerge following the public launch. And the company wants the chance to address these before pushing the update to its full user base.
But now with iOS 27.0.1 available, Apple has made iOS 27 the default update for users still on iOS 26.
So the next time those users go to Settings ⇾ General ⇾ Software Update, they’ll see iOS 27.0.1 featured prominently.
Users will still have the option of staying on iOS 26. But we can expect to see iOS 27 adoption accelerate now that Apple has made it the primary update in Settings.
Last year Apple waited until after iOS 26.1 was available before recommending the switch from iOS 18. So pushing iOS 27 much earlier this year is a clear endorsement of the company’s focus on bug fixes and stability with its latest major update.
