Apple is looking for an experienced cellular modem systems engineer to help develop its next generation of cellular modems as the company transitions toward 6G. Here are the details.
‘A rare opportunity to shape the future of wireless communication’
As spotted by MacRumors, Apple listed a new job opening yesterday for a 6G Cellular Modem Systems Engineer, with a base salary range of $175,000 to $308,500 per year, plus stock awards and other benefits.
From the job listing:
We’re looking for a Cellular Modem Systems Engineer to join our cellular systems engineering team as we define and build the next generation of cellular technology. This is a rare opportunity to shape the future of wireless communication at a company that ships at global scale as we transition towards 6G. In this role, you’ll bring an end-to-end view of wireless systems — spanning 3GPP standards, feature definition and planning, design, hardware and software architecture and partitioning — to deliver leading-edge performance and power optimizations and features that directly improve the user experience across Apple products. If you thrive at the intersection of deep technical theory and hands-on bring-up — and you’re excited about pushing beyond 5G into the 6G era — we want to hear from you.
Apple says the candidate’s responsibilities will include defining features and requirements for next-generation cellular modems, designing algorithms to improve performance and power efficiency, and working with hardware and software teams to bring those technologies to market.
The candidate should have a degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a related field, along with at least 10 years of industry experience working with cellular technologies.
Apple also requires a strong understanding of cellular communication standards and proficiency in MATLAB, C/C++, or Python.
Interestingly, Apple also lists experience with generative AI and LLM-based tools “to accelerate engineering workflows” as a minimum qualification. Ideally, the candidate should also have a track record of published research or patents in wireless communications, among other preferred qualifications.
For context, 6G is still years away and in the early stages of development, as companies and industry organizations work to define what it will look like.
The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has outlined potential peak speeds of up to 200 Gbps, compared to 5G’s theoretical maximum of 20 Gbps, along with research targets for latency as low as 0.1 milliseconds.
AI is also expected to play a much bigger role in 6G, helping networks automatically adjust to changing conditions, optimize signal quality, manage traffic, and reduce power consumption.
The first official 6G technical specifications are expected to be finalized in late 2028, with commercial networks and compatible devices anticipated around 2030.
