iPhone Duo adding Apple Pencil support next week with iOS 27.2

iPhone Duo reviews have arrived (read our in-depth review here). And a surprise bit of good news we’ve learned today is that Apple Pencil support on iPhone Duo will arrive much sooner than expected: it’s coming next week in iOS 27.2.

iOS 27.2 will bring Apple Pencil support to iPhone Duo very soon

When Apple unveiled the iPhone Duo in September, it said Apple Pencil support was coming “later this year.”

With the Duo not arriving until late October, and Apple’s pattern of launching noteworthy software updates in December, it was generally assumed that iPhone Duo users would need to wait until December to use Apple Pencil.

But there’s good news: Apple Pencil support is included in iOS 27.2, which is launching next week.

Max Weinbach shared on X that support is available in the iOS 27.2 RC.

So if you’re among the lucky few who secured an iPhone Duo pre-order for this Friday, you’ll only have to wait a few days for Apple Pencil support to arrive. For everyone else, it will be available right when your Duo arrives.

iPhone Duo will only work with the Apple Pencil (USB-C) model. No other Pencil models are compatible.

So if you have an Apple Pencil Pro or standard Pencil, you’ll need to buy the USB-C model which works with most iPads and also the iPhone Duo. It’s currently on sale for $69 on Amazon.

If you’re running the iOS 27.2 RC, you’ll get Pencil support on day one this Friday. But if you want to stick with Apple’s public software releases, iOS 27.2 is expected to launch on or around Monday, October 26.
