OLED iPad mini 8 debuting this week: Here’s what’s coming, and how much it’ll cost

For the first time since 2021, Apple will be overhauling the iPad mini with new display technology. It also marks the first chip refresh since 2024. Here’s what Apple has in store for this all-new iPad mini.

OLED display

This is certainly the rumor you’ve heard the most. The next iPad mini will feature an OLED display. It won’t be Tandem OLED like the iPad Pro, though you’ll still get more vibrant colors, improved contrast, and a brighter display.

However, it’s unclear if Apple will ship a 120Hz ProMotion display. The new iPad mini might end up being 60Hz still. Let’s hope that isn’t the case.

A20 Pro chip

The current iPad mini features Apple’s 3nm A17 Pro chip with 8GB of memory. Rumors suggest that this new iPad mini will offer the A20 Pro chip with 12gb of memory, allowing it to run Apple’s most advanced on-device models locally, which gives you some improved voice/dictation features with Siri AI.

Beyond Siri AI, the A20 Pro should be a rather notable jump in performance from the A17 Pro, with a roughly 60% improvement in multi-core CPU performance, and a 166% improvement in GPU performance.

Water resistance

Apple is working on making the iPad mini water-resistant, with a new casing and redesigned speakers that’ll help push out water ingress. This’ll potentially make the iPad mini the first ever water-resistant iPad.

Pricing

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the upcoming iPad mini with OLED and the A20 Pro chip could potentially start at $799, a substantial increase from the current $599 starting price of iPad mini. It’s unclear if it’ll continue to start with 128GB of base storage at that price point, though one could hope that the company ships 256GB to lessen the blow.
