Apple is widely expected to introduce a new OLED iPad mini as soon as later this month. A sketchy new rumor today once again claims the new iPad mini will switch to OLED but still have a 60Hz refresh rate and lack ProMotion support.
OLED iPad mini might lack ProMotion
This is the second time we’ve heard this rumor, but both times it has come from the same source: the yeux1122 account on Naver. This account has a very mixed track record with Apple rumors. It often seems to regurgitate information from unnamed sources rather than provide its own.
Nonetheless, the latest post from yeux1122 claims “there is mention of 120Hz in some overseas sources” for the new OLED iPad mini, but “domestic production volume has already confirmed” it will use a 60Hz display.
Again, I’m treating this rumor with more than a healthy dose of skepticism, since no other reliable sources have corroborated it.
However, if it does come to fruition, this will be a disappointing limitation for iPad mini buyers. This iPad mini upgrade is expected to bring a number of other notable improvements, including:
- An OLED display.
- Apple’s A20 Pro chip, up from the current iPad mini’s A17 Pro chip.
- A refreshed design with smaller bezels that could be more water-resistant.
- The FaceTime camera will be relocated to the horizontal bezel, similar to Apple’s other iPad models.
If Apple made all those changes but stopped short of upgrading the display to ProMotion with a 120Hz refresh rate, it’d really sour the launch of the new iPad mini.
The new iPad mini is expected to launch later this month, so we don’t have much longer to wait to know for sure.
What do you think? Will the new iPad mini have ProMotion and 120Hz refresh rates? Let us know down in the comments.
