Apple announces M6 iMac with faster chip, N1 wireless upgrades, improved Ethernet

Apple is in the midst of a week of product unveilings. Yesterday brought the new iPad mini with OLED, and now today there’s an upgraded iMac powered by the M6 chip.

The new iMac has the same 24-inch display and overall design as before, but with upgraded internals.

M6 is the main focus here, with notable improvements over the M4 model in several key areas. It has an up to 12-core CPU, 12-core GPU, and Dual 16-core Neural Engine. The previous iMac only offered up to a 10-core CPU and GPU, and 16-core Neural Engine.

Compared to M4, users should expect up to:

  • 40% faster CPU performance
  • 2x faster graphics
  • 2x faster storage
  • 5x faster on-device AI performance

Additional new features of the iMac include:

  • N1 wireless chip for Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, up from Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3
  • configurable with 2.5Gb Ethernet for “up to 2.5x faster wired connectivity than the previous generation”
  • Up to 170GB/s memory bandwidth (previously 120GB/s)

The M6 iMac starts at $1,499, the same price as before.

Pre-orders for the new iMac start tomorrow, October 28 at 10:10 a.m. PT. That’s expected to be just minutes after the rumored MacBook Pro redesign is unveiled. It will ship Friday, November 6.
