iPhone Duo could capture nearly 30% of foldable market in 2027, per report

In a report released today, TrendForce says that with strong demand for the iPhone Duo out of the gate, Apple is poised to capture nearly 30% of the global foldable smartphone market by 2027. Here are the details.

iPhone Duo projected to quickly gain market share

One day after Apple announced the iPhone Duo last month, TrendForce published a report predicting that the company would ship 5 million units of its first foldable iPhone by the end of 2026, capturing 24.8% of the segment.

At the time, TrendForce expected the overall foldable smartphone market to grow by just 0.5% in 2026, with shipments from Android brands alone falling by more than 20% year over year.

By contrast, TrendForce expected the market to reach 23.5 million shipments in 2027, a 16.3% increase. The firm also suggested that Apple’s entry could help drive future growth through improvements in foldable technology, while new AI use cases could further boost demand.

With the iPhone Duo now shipping for nearly a week, TrendForce published a new report today reiterating its previous projections and forecasting that Apple will capture 29.8% of the foldable smartphone market in 2027.

"TrendForce notes that Apple’s greatest advantage lies in its ability to integrate chips, operating systems, and its developer ecosystem."

And that it's customer base will buy anything Apple sells, like a $30 polishing cloth.

People buy the Z Fold, Pixel Fold, Huawei Fold, because they want productivity. People buy the Microsoft Duo, I mean iPhone Duo, to impress their friends. Welcome to the Ferrari of the phone world.

From the report:

TrendForce notes that Apple’s greatest advantage lies in its ability to integrate chips, operating systems, and its developer ecosystem. As app compatibility and hardware reliability improve, the Duo is expected to further expand the practical value of foldable displays, helping shift competition in the foldable smartphone market from form-factor innovation toward multitasking efficiency.

If TrendForce’s projections pan out, Apple will hold second place in the foldable smartphone market in 2027, behind Samsung, whose share is expected to fall from 35.1% in 2026 to 31.9% next year, and ahead of Huawei, which is projected to drop from 24.8% to 21.3%.
