Blackberry Bold, the 'Buick of Smartphones'

AllthingsD (which means automatically blessed by Walt) does a review of the Blackberry Bold.  It pretty much meets expectations…for a Blackberry.  Big, beautiful screen, great physical keyboard, fast internet and email access and more bells and whistles all around.  But we can’t help but feel the dissapointment in the size and feel of the thing.

‘the Bold reminded me of my grandparents’ new Buick: handsomely polished and luxuriously comfortable, with plenty of extra bells and whistles. As much as I like the plush feel of this ride, it can feel as big as a boat when I need to park or navigate narrow city streets. Likewise, the Bold’s large size affords mobile extravagances like a keyboard I could use without looking down and a leatherette-covered back panel. But when tossed in a bag or even held in my hand, the BlackBerry Bold simply feels too heavy and too big.’

Apple, Asus, netbooks on the mind

You got to admit it, one person you never want to take on in a Poker game would have to be Apple CEO, Steve Jobs, surely?

Think about it.

This man is one of the most accomplished truth deflectors in the business – we’re not saying he doesn’t tell the truth, he does, he’s pretty much always honest, he’s just good, really, really good at saying truthful things which make listeners think they hear the opposite of what he says

Remember Steve Jobs on enabling video playback for iPods, when he was so often heard to say, “the iPod is for listening to music, it’s not designed for video.”

Campaign ad: McCain can't even use a Mac?

We aren’t taking sides here on any political fronts – our comments system probably couldn’t handle it.   Both candidates are amazing stories and we’ll leave it at that OK?

Anyway – Obama’s campaign has jumped on the "out of touch" message toward McCain by saying he "doesn’t use a computer" (see screengrab below).  Not even a nice new MacBook Pro?  Come on, even a 72 year old war vet can use a MacBook.  I call BS!

To be fair, the Obama campaign team used Brush Script in the Ad which is just as 1982 as not using computers (thanks comment).  When McCain has an Apple related ad, we’ll throw it up – promise!

Mossberg comes out (yet again) against the US mobile cartel

You have to admire Walt Mossberg for taking his position as grand exalted leader amongst technology journalists directly to the US telecoms.  He is single handedly trying to break the hold on consumers that the Sprint/Tmobile/AT&T/Verizon Cartel has on the US Mobile industry.  To his credit, he has gotten Verizon to promise that in Q3 2008, that it will accept any device on its platform – as long as it meets a very simple set of requirements (like no VoIP?).  If he were running for Office, we’d vote for him.

Wired Tablet profiled, questions about iPad remain

Wired today offers an update on their tablet work from their earlier concepts.  While they say that they are designing for the iPad and iPhone, they’ve created this product on Adobe Air from the same Adobe InDesign files they use to create their award-winning magazine.   If it isn’t obvious by now, Apple isn’t going to allow Adobe Air or Flash on the iPad.  They say:

Although the Wired Reader starts as an AIR app, Adobe has created tools that allow us to easily convert it for major tablet and mobile platforms. In Barcelona this week, Adobe announced that AIR would run on Android, and Adobe has already announced its Packager for iPhone tool that will allow Flash apps (including AIR) to run on Apple mobile platforms. And AIR already runs natively on Mac, Windows and Linux operating systems.

So is Adobe offering some magical Adobe Air to iPad conversion tool?  It isn’t out of the realm of possibility, since they’ve got a Flash CS5-> iPhone app exporter already in production.
