A poll of nearly 3,000 9to5Mac readers revealed the unsurprising news that the most popular model in the upcoming lineup is the iPhone 17 Pro Max.
But what may be a little more surprising is that, based on what we know so far, the iPhone 17 Air is more appealing than the iPhone 17 Pro …
If we examine only the iPhone preferences expressed in the poll, we get the following results:
- iPhone 17 Pro Max: 38%
- iPhone 17 Air: 28%
- iPhone 17 Pro: 24%
- iPhone 17: 10%
That’s a relatively small difference, but given the power-user profile of our readers, it’s still interesting that a less powerful model is taking second place in your affections.
The iPhone 17 air will be a brand new model in the line-up, focused on design. We’re expecting it to be the slimmest iPhone the company has ever made, at just 5.55mm. It will have a 6.6 inch display which will put it between the 6.3 inch and 6.9 inch displays of the iPhone 7 Pro and Pro Max respectively.
Power-wise, we’re expecting it to get the same A19 Pro chip as the Pro model models but with one GPU core disabled. We’re also anticipating a 120Hz display for smooth scrolling, and hopefully an always-on display – though with just a little doubt there.
However, the new model will involve a number of compromises. Most importantly, it will have just a single rear camera compared to the three cameras of the two Pro models. That ultra-sleek design also means less room for battery, so more demanding users may struggle to get through a full day. It’s also expected to lack the new anti-reflective screen of its Pro companions.
All the same, that uber-sleek look is going to look attractive for sure! While there is no chance of me buying one, I’m on record as saying I fully intend to go to my local Apple store to lovingly stroke one. If you don’t need the camera capabilities and can cope with the battery life, I can certainly see the appeal.
