New iPhone Fold specs revealed, including design, cameras, more

It’s been a busy day for iPhone Fold leaks. After one reputable leaker reported that Apple’s foldable will have the biggest battery yet in an iPhone, new details have been shared by another leaker on several aspects of the iPhone Fold’s design, cameras, and more.

iPhone Fold: New details on design and more

Leaker Instant Digital has a new post on Weibo today that’s all about the upcoming iPhone Fold.

He outlines a variety of design and feature details for the foldable, including several tidbits that have not been reported before.

Here’s a translation via Google Translate:

The volume buttons are not on the left side, but are instead placed directly on the top right side of the device (similar to the volume button placement on the iPad mini), which will challenge users’ phone usage habits.

The power button (integrated with Touch ID) and the AI button (camera button) are still on the right side.

Why this placement? The motherboard is on the right side, and they didn’t want to run wires across the screen to the left side for the buttons, so the left side is completely free of physical buttons, with almost all the space dedicated to the screen structure and battery. This also results in the iPhone with the largest battery capacity ever.

Single punch-hole front camera design, with a smaller and cleaner active area cutout.

In short, the iPhone Fold features an extreme, yet reasonable and elegant internal stacking structure that is expected to shock the industry.

The rear dual cameras, microphone, and flash are arranged horizontally on the right side. The module “appears” to have a completely black base, not matching the body color.

Currently, only white is confirmed, but two color options are expected to be released.

Moving volume buttons to the top-right of the device will certainly require a mental shift for users. But it’s understandable for what will be a brand new form factor. Additionally, any change that enables more battery life is likely a good thing.

The post highlights cameras in a couple of ways. It says the front-facing camera will be added via a hole-punch design. This makes sense since the foldable won’t have Face ID, only Touch ID. Thus, a full Dynamic Island cutout isn’t needed.

Volume buttons on the top with Power & Camera Control buttons on the right - but what about the Action Button? Surely that’s been much better received than the Camera Control?

I wonder how good the inner display will be in comparison whether if it will also sport 3000 max nits & 1 nit minimum brightness, 3 x times scratch-resistant screen, 7-layer anti-reflective coating & perhaps a digitiser for Apple Pencil Pro support?

Additionally, the rear cameras are said to be arranged horizontally—a change from how Apple has typically designed two-camera setups.

The mention of a completely black camera plateau is interesting. Especially since the leaker says white is the only confirmed color so far—though a black model is likely too.

Overall, it sounds like the iPhone Fold will in some ways reflect the iPhone Air’s design, and in others look more like an iPad mini.
