Buying an iPhone Ultra could be an expensive experiment, warns resale site

No delay to iPhone Ultra (render shown), says supply-chain report

If you are planning to buy an iPhone Ultra to find out how useful it is in practice, with the idea of selling it if it doesn’t live up to expectations, a resale site warns that it could prove a very expensive experiment.

Data shows that foldables lose more resale value in their first year than any other smartphone category, whether measured in percentage or absolute terms …

Reports of iPhone Ultra launch delays are ‘false,’ says leaker

Alongside question marks on whether the first folding iPhone will be branded as the iPhone Fold, iPhone Ultra, or something else, there’s also been uncertainty about the launch timings. (I’m going to refer to it as the iPhone Ultra purely to avoid clumsy phrasing.)

There have been multiple reports suggesting that the launch could be significantly delayed, but a new comment from a leaker with a decent track record says otherwise …

Suppliers expect iPhone Ultra to launch in September, despite reported delays | iPhone Ultra render shown

Price alone is likely to make the iPhone Fold (or iPhone Ultra) a somewhat niche product in Apple’s lineup, but a new survey suggests there could be more interest than one might expect.

Coincidence or not, the latest Android folding smartphones mirror the form factor we’re expecting from the iPhone Ultra (now believed to be Apple’s branding for what was previously referred to as the iPhone Fold).

The Oppo Find N6 last month gave us a look at something very similar to the creaseless display we’re expecting Apple to offer, and today an extensive unboxing and hands-on of the Huawei Pura X Max 5G provides a video look at a device with much the same format we’re expecting from the iPhone Ultra …

Fold, Ultra, or something else? What should Apple call the foldable display iPhone?

Suppliers expect iPhone Ultra to launch in September, despite reported delays | iPhone Ultra render shown

Apple is widely expected to release the first iPhone with a foldable display this year. What’s less certain is exactly when it will launch and what Apple will call it.

iPhone Fold, to me, is the clearest shorthand way to reference the foldable iPhone before it has an official name. It also feels like the least likely name to actually be used.

A new report from Digitimes today says that production of Apple’s upcoming iPhone Fold has hit a roadblock. According to “sources within the company’s supply chain,” mass production of the device has slipped from July to August of this year.

Still, Apple is aiming to launch the iPhone Fold in 2026, as Bloomberg also reported last week … but it might be really hard to actually buy one.

Trendforce says hi-tech glue could be key to an invisible crease in the iPhone Ultra

Trendforce says hi-tech glue could be key to an invisible crease in the iPhone Ultra (render shown)

It’s believed that Apple has waited many years to launch the first folding iPhone in large part because the company wasn’t happy with the very visible crease in early competitor models. We’re expecting that foldable iPhone to be launched later this year, likely branded as the iPhone Ultra.

The crease problem was reportedly solved last year, but a new report suggests that multiple innovations have been required in order to make the crease near invisible – and that a hi-tech glue is one of the key elements …
