Apple’s TV app just added autoplaying video to more parts of the app

Apple’s TV app recently got a new change for users across iPhone, iPad, Mac, and more: when browsing titles, autoplaying video has expanded to more parts of the app.

You’ll now see more autoplaying previews when browsing Apple’s TV app

When you’re in a streaming app looking for what to watch next, it’s becoming more common for apps to autoplay video previews as you’re browsing.

In the Apple TV app, autoplaying video was previous limited to just the top of the screen. That ‘featured title’ carousel has supported autoplaying previews for years.

But recently, Apple expanded autoplaying video to more parts of the TV app interface.

For example, both the Home tab and the Apple TV tab in the app now have autoplaying video previews when you scroll further down in the UI too.

In the Home tab, there’s a new ‘Perfectly Imperfect’ row that arrived with Imperfect Women’s premiere this week.

This row features titles with larger artwork, and when you pause a moment on each title, a video preview will start to autoplay.

The same behavior can be found in the Apple TV tab with the ‘New Seasons This Spring’ row.

Starting with Your Friends & Neighbors season 2, pause a moment on each title in the row and autoplaying previews will kick in. You’ll see this effect with every title in that large-artwork row.

This expansion of autoplaying video isn’t necessarily surprising, as every social platform uses autoplaying video these days too. And Apple’s implementation doesn’t feel particularly jarring, in my opinion. If you keep scrolling, the video won’t start playing—it only autoplays if you stop scrolling for long enough.

Apple TV is available for $12.99 per month, or you can get it discounted through the Apple One bundle.
