Apple launched iOS 26.4, iPadOS 26.4, macOS 26.4, and more software updates today, and now the company has also debuted new firmware for AirPods Pro 3, AirPods Pro 2, and more.
Latest AirPods firmware arrives ahead of AirPods Max 2 release
Today’s lineup of new Apple software releases, headlined by iOS 26.4, have been joined by new firmware for AirPods.
Apple has released firmware version 8B39 for certain AirPods models, including:
- AirPods Pro 3
- AirPods Pro 2
- AirPods 4
The new release might also support AirPods Max 2, but we’ve been unable to confirm that yet.

When Apple introduced AirPods Max 2 last week, it mentioned that certain features would require iOS 26.4 running the latest AirPods firmware. It’s therefore likely that this 8B39 release is that new firmware.
iOS 26.4 doesn’t offer any new AirPods-specific features, but the new firmware is expected to improve performance with the latest updates.
Apple has yet to publish release notes for today’s firmware, but most AirPods firmware releases simply focus on “bug fixes and other improvements.” When the release notes are available, they’ll be published here.
Unlike most Apple devices, new AirPods firmware can’t be manually installed by users. Instead, Apple says it will install in the background when a variety of conditions are met. Those conditions include being in range of your iPhone, keeping AirPods in their charging case, and more.
