Apple Wallet’s new Digital ID feature just got way more useful in Texas

Today Apple implemented a variety of age-related restrictions in Texas based on new legislation, and as a result, the Wallet app’s Digital ID feature just became far more useful for Texans.

Digital ID can be used for iPhone age verification in Texas following new state requirements

Following today’s freshly implemented iPhone age requirements in Texas, there’s a new way to use the Wallet app’s Digital ID feature in the state.

That’s according to a new support document titled: Age requirements for managing an Apple Account in the United States (Texas). Here’s an excerpt:

Due to Texas law, these age requirements apply to new Apple Accounts created in Texas on or after June 4, 2026:

That first bullet point is where Digital ID is especially relevant.

Last fall, Apple launched Digital ID in the Wallet app with initial support at TSA checkpoints.

Recently, Apple expanded Digital ID to be used for age verification in select territories around the world. And now, Texas is the first place in the US to join that list.

Anyone in Texas who creates an Apple Account will, starting today, need to prove their age to use certain services and features. And one of the supported verification methods is Digital ID.

You can create a Digital ID by opening the Wallet app, then:

  1. Hitting the plus button in the top-right corner
  2. Selecting ‘Driver’s License and ID Cards’
  3. Hitting ‘Digital ID’ at the top, then authenticating with a US passport

If similar legislation passes in other states, we should expect to see Digital ID continue being supported as a privacy-friendly age verification method in each new place.
