New MacBook Pro leak could be very good news for ‘pro’ users

Apple’s redesigned MacBook Pro is coming soon, and the latest leak offers potentially great news for truly ‘pro’ users worried about the rumored thinner design.

Redesigned MacBook Pro will be much lighter, but not ‘significantly thinner,’ per Mark Gurman

The MacBook Pro has long attracted customers who may not be ‘pros’ in the sense of doing professional coding work, video editing, photography, or other tasks that require extra computing power.

Plenty of people want a MacBook Pro simply because it’s the best laptop Apple sells. It has the best display in a Mac, the most power, and the longest battery life.

But a new MacBook Pro design is coming, and previous reporting has said it will be thinner and lighter than the current model. Earlier this week Mark Gurman even said it will be “significantly” lighter.

That might sound great to ‘prosumers’ like myself, but it probably raises alarm bells for true ‘pros.’

Last night in a post on X though, Mark Gurman offered good news:

Thinner, but not significantly so, while still offering a big weight reduction, sounds like exactly the right balance that should please most users.

If the new design doesn’t bring a drastic reduction in thickness, that’s good news for at least three reasons. It means the new MacBook Pro should:

  1. Retain all or most of its existing ports
  2. Offer battery life that’s not far off from current models
  3. Have plenty of thermal headroom

Weight is generally a more common complaint than thickness with the current MacBook Pro, so if Apple can make the new MacBook Pro easier to carry, slim it down a bit, and still offer the kind of power and versatility pros need, that sounds like a big win.
