After first showing off the latest Mac Pro at WWDC 2013 and launching the professional-class desktop computer last December, Apple’s certified refurbished online store is now carrying discounted models for the first time.
The 2013 Mac Pro, which is the only Mac computer manufactured in the United States, ordinarily starts at $2,999 for the base model configuration, but customers looking to save on that cost can now get the same configuration for $450 less at $2,549. A variety of other configurations are available in refurbished models with discounted price tags ranging up to $7,479…
As Apple notes, products sold from its certified refurbished store include the same 1-year warranty as brand new products as Apple guarantees its own refurbs, and can be warranted for up to three years with AppleCare just like other Macs.
While the current reburb lineup features a wide variety of configurations, you won’t find any available in retail locations as refurbished machines either ship to stores after ordering or deliver to your address.
As for the potential to grab a discount, the current maxed out Mac Pro refurb going for $7,479 retails brand new at $8,799 delivering a savings of over $1,300 for the refurbished model.
Apple notes that inventory and availability is both limited and likely to change.
Earlier this year, Apple CEO Tim Cook made an appearance to tour the facility in Texas where the 2013 Mac Pro models are assembled. Apple recently introduced a $49 Kensington lock-compatible security adapter for the 2013 Mac Pro.

The savings alone is as much as a Mac mini.
I hope they update my favorite little Mac this year.
Yeah, Apple how about instead of releasing updates that “brick” people’s phones, you get in the news for something positive like a new Mac Mini. My wallet is waiting to buy one.
This is no where near enough to change the basic value equation though.

$450 off, is less than the tax really. Maybe a 10% savings when all is said and done, if that, and you get a second hand machine.
Anyone who has bought a refurbished product from Apple knows that Apple’s refurbished products are as good as new.
Its 15% of the pre-sales tax price. So the sales tax is charged after you take off 15%. So the tax charged to the refurbished mac is 15% less than the tax on the new Mac Pro. So in summary, its 15% off no matter how you slice it.
