Apple says iPad mini 3 will start at $399 with pre-orders starting tomorrow

Apple today announced the third generation of its 7.9-inch tablet with the new iPad mini 3. Apple says the new iPad mini 3 will start at $399 and be available for pre-order starting tomorrow. Storage capacities start at 16GB with both WiFi-only and Cellular options available. The new iPad mini 3 will be available in space gray, silver, and gold (for the first time).

While the iPad mini 3 doesn’t contain much aside from Touch ID and a gold option, the new lineup does contain a price change for the higher storage capacities as 32GB has dropped from the lineup. Buyers can now pickup a 64GB iPad mini 3 starting at $499 and a 128GB iPad mini 3 starting at $599, which is $100 less than the previous year’s lineup for the same storage capacities.

One would have to be INSANE to buy the iPad mini 3, if you already have the iPad mini 2. It’s the EXACT same machine, but with TouchID (which should have come last year).

Same processor, same size and weight, same screen tech, same resolution, same EVERYTHING.

Agreed. Touch ID for what logging in? I’ll keep my $100 and buy an iPad mini 2

True but a lot of us are still using an iPad mini 1 and could use the extra resolution. Would have liked some more RAM to make Safari more usable, though.

The only difference appears to be the fingerprint sensor. (and the jump from 32GB to 64GB). Everything else is the same as the previous version. Same chip, same wireless, etc.

Without 2GB of RAM, the mini3 is a pretty hard sell over the mini2. And if Apple included the same crappy 63% gamut screen as in the mini2, it will be a non-starter. TouchID and “gold” isn’t worth $100, except to fools.
