We’re hearing that iOS 8.2 is currently planned for release sometime in March, as BGR reported today. The new iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch software is currently scheduled to be released during the second week of the month, but this timeline is not set in stone. The new software update is mostly an Apple Watch compatibility release as it includes the underlying functionality needed to connect to the wearable via WatchKit. We previously revealed the Apple Watch Companion application that requires iOS 8.2. Apple seeded the most recent iOS 8.2 beta yesterday. The Apple Watch will ship by April. Stay tuned for more details.

I’m guessing there will be some kind of press announcement for the watch in march with full pricing and announced dates for preorders and shipping. The release could come same day as the announcement? Maybe they want some lead in time so people install it before it to be ready for the watch. Not get some shiny new toy and then be like… oh need to install a software update first!
While Watch and WatchKit certainly are major reasons for the iOS 8.2 update, there is one more thing…
HomeKit! Some this-party hardware were shown at CES, and some of that stuff will reach the market soon. Maybe even before Watch. I read on another site that you can ask Siri to turn off the lights, and get a reply like “Hmm, I don’t see anything connected. But if you set something up, I think I’d enjoy the company.”
The only thing we’re waiting for is some hardware to reach the stores.
