With Parallels Desktop 13 just out, VMware clearly didn’t want to be left out of the picture. The company has announced that Fusion 10 will be launched in October, with enhanced GPU and 3D graphics performance, an updated UI and Touch Bar support. It is also ready for macOS 10.13 High Sierra.
Fusion, like competitor Parallels, allows you to run virtual Windows machines – or individual Windows apps – within macOS. This can be more convenient than Boot Camp for those who operate primarily in a macOS environment.
The standard version, costing $79, is intended for personal use, while the Pro version, at $159, is aimed at developers and tech professionals. The company also confirmed upgrade pricing, as well as a special deal for those buying the existing version between now and October …
Fusion 8.5 owners will be able to upgrade to Fusion 10 for $49, or to Fusion 10 Pro for $119. It’s also offering anyone who buys now a free upgrade.
Customers who purchase Fusion 8.5 or Fusion 8.5 Pro between August 22 and November 1 will be eligible for an electronic upgrade to Fusion 10 or Fusion 10 Pro, respectively, at no additional cost
The Touch Bar will be used to access commonly-used controls.
VMware says that support for Apple’s Metal Graphics offers both performance and battery-life improvements.
A big feature several years in the making is our new support for Apple’s Metal Graphics acceleration technology, which gives our virtual GPU engine a noticeable boost in Performance, Battery/Power Efficiency and accuracy of rendering. Both games and professional applications like AutoCAD benefit from this enhanced feature.
The company says that the Pro version is designed to be integrated into DevOps/agile development workflows.
VMware Fusion 10 Pro will provide the foundation of modern development and testing, enabling multi- operating system development, multi-operating system testing, and integration into DevOps/agile development workflows. Fusion enables IT professionals and developers to run virtual machines that are compatible with corporate data centers from a Mac to perform tasks such as data center design and testing, data center management, network design and testing, and application development and testing.
Support for REST APIs will offer a new interface for managing virtual machines (VMs) remotely and programmatically. This will enable developers and enterprises to integrate Fusion into a modern development and testing pipeline by performing VM operations including VM inventory management, VM power management, cloning, networking, configuration, and IP and MAC address gathering, among others.
It’s likely that the decision by VMware to announce today, some two months ahead of availability, was prompted by getting wind of today’s Parallels release.
