According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, AirTag 2 will feature a large upgrade to one key feature of the product: Precision Finding. Thanks to a new ultrawide band chip, you’ll be able to track your AirTag from up to 3x the distance as the current model.
AirTag originally debuted in 2021, and the product has been left untouched since. We started to hear AirTag 2 rumors earlier this year, though they weren’t exactly super clear on what benefits the new model would offer. Now, we’re getting a pretty clear detail:
Mark Gurman reports that the new AirTag will share the same next-gen ultrawide band chip as the iPhone 15, and thanks to that, we’ll have triple the range when using Precision Finding.
The current model, which uses the ultrawide band chip introduced with the iPhone 11, can currently be tracked with Precision Finding when you’re around 10-30 meters away. With triple the distance, we could be talking 30-90 meters, which would be a noticeable improvement, allowing users to have a far better idea of where their lost items are actually located.
With AirTag, if you’re outside of the Precision Finding range, you can see a rough location on a map, or play a chime to help find it.
If you’re looking to pick up the current model of AirTag for the holidays, there are some good deals to be found. You can currently pick up an individual AirTag for just $24, or a 4 pack for $72.99. That’s $18 an AirTag with the 4 pack!
