NBC $0.99 TV Show Rentals Coming to iTunes?

The information comes from a screenshot we’ve discovered by digging around the iTunes website. Nokia Siemens: iOS 4.2 supports new tech for better network performance

Site default logo image

In a blog post today Nokia Siemens claims that Apple’s latest smart phone operating system supports a technology called Network Controlled Fast Dormancy. This new technology brings the iPhone and its’ network together to create the most ideal performance. This means the iPhone’s software can work with the cellular towers to find ones with the least amount of congestion. In the end this technology allows the iPhone to run more efficiently and last longer throughout the day.

Nokia Siemens’ networks are one of the first to support this technology and it is interesting to note that they made the discovery through their own in-house testing. This technology being in iOS 4.2 does not appear to be a result of a collaboration between Nokia Siemens and Apple. In terms of actual battery life stats on this new technology their tests in the Middle East showed a battery life increase from 6 to 11 hours on an unnamed smartphone.

Jobs: Airplay for Safari and 3rd party apps coming in 2011

Site default logo image

Remember last week when we showed you a Cydia App that enabled Airplay for all devices? Based on the ease of getting it to work at the time we said:

This is big because it means Apple could easily (and will likely) enable [Airplay for all apps] in future versions of the iOS.

Today Steve Jobs went on record (more or less) saying that indeed Apple is planning to build it into Safari and the SDK.

Until then, there are the hacks.

iPad now free in Japan with $56/month plan

Site default logo image

Here’s the story.  The short of it is that Softbank is giving away free 16GB 3G iPads with two-year data plans.  At ¥4,725 ($56)/month, that is $31 over the 2GB AT&T rates.  So $31×24(months)= $744.  A 3G iPad costs $629 in the US.  So roughly $115 to defer the purchase price over two years.  Not a bad deal at all.

How many of you would buy in if AT&T/Verizon did this?

In other news the same upcoming web browser for the Apple TV we showed you recently has a new walkthrough video (below) this time demonstrating HTML 5 video playing functionality on the second-generation Apple TV.

Following on from Erica’s Sadun’s discovery of a way to enable AirPlay Video streaming in third-party apps, a developer named Zone-MR created a hack which enables this feature in all applications including Apple’s Safari.

This is big because it means Apple could easily (and will likely) enable it in future versions of the iOS.

The hack itsself can be downloaded from this Cydia repository:

(and it should be available in other repositories soon)
