After botched debut, new Apple TV update is back with fixes

After releasing a buggy version of new Apple TV software last week (and subsequently removing it from download) Apple has issued a new version of the update to Apple TV users. The new version is labeled Apple TV Software 6.0, and it comes in at build number 11A502. This is a substantial increase from pulled 11A470e version. The new Apple TV update brings iTunes Radio, the iTunes Music Store, and new AirPlay functionality. Thanks, Adebola!

After the intense disaster of the first attempt there is no way in hell I’m doing this update right away. It was a total clusterf*ck on Apple’s part which they didn’t even apologise for.

The fact that they did it on iPhone release day when the Apple stores were all busy, and that you needed an Android phone cable to restore that Apple doesn’t even carry in their stores anyway was just the shit icing on the crap cake. I was completely without TV for 24 hours and had to pay $30 for a cable that I will hopefully never use again.

When did they start making android phone cables?

If you paid $30 for a micro USB cable… you got screwed in some way! Sorry for the joke because I do feel your pain! Same thing happened to me before and my local Apple Store didn’t even have the cable in stock for their own Apple TV. The Apple TV should honestly come with a cable, or better yet, implement the lighting cable into the Apple TV so people can just use their iPhone/iPad/iPod cable to restore the Apple TV if necessary…

What the hell is an “Android Cable”? Did you need a U…S…B Cord? And…you paid $30 for one? And…Aren’t you used to that anyway?

I had the same issue except I paid $7 for the micro-usb at Walmart. I was able to restore via iTunes and had 6.0 before apple pulled the update. I was thumbing through the aTV settings and saw the ‘dreaded’ update available. I too was hesitant to go through all that misery again and went searching online for any reassurance. Most of what I found didn’t sound too bad. Eventually, I took a deep breath and said, “What the heck, the worst that could happen is I throw the SOB out the window”. I hit the update button and it went through a 2 step process going to a blank screen for a minute or two between each step (my heart stopped during those periods). The total from hitting the download button to the reboot took a total of about 10 minutes. It also took another minute or two once all the icons appeared to be able to use the remove. All my settings were retained this time and it appears so far that the aTV is more responsive and my wireless is showing a stronger signal than it had with the previous 6.0 version. I didn’t write down the previous version but the latest is v6.0 (6656.65). Sure as heck wished it worked like this the first time!

Does this mean Home Sharing will actually work over Wifi without having to constantly reboot AppleTV or get up and turn off iTunes over and over again each night when I go to use it?

sheesh… I thought it was just me.

So glad I am not alone. Last night I actually had to reboot the computer despite restarting itunes, restarting Bonjour and restarting the AppleTV. The worst is when one AppleTV works and the other decides not to play. The only solution anyone seems to post is ‘buy an Airport’.

    • Home Sharing worked great for me this morning. Big 20GB movie files were no problem, and I tried 4 or 5 in succession, no iTunes reboot needed. Just FYI this is from the ATV update from last week. I luckily didn’t get bricked. Unsure whether to install the new-new update.

Hate it. Still, the only new channel app is Vevo. Tsk!

Is this a regional thing? Everything everyone is complaining about we already had on our at when we bought it 3 mos ago…I’m doing the update now but sounds like it’s not going to change anything…we already had vevo and the radio on it and no issues connecting for home sharing for the 483 days worth of music we have..so what am I missing?
