Bloomberg corroborates reports of gold iPad coming with next hardware revision

iPad-mini-gold-concept-03

In line with previous claims, Bloomberg is now reporting that Apple is planning to introduce a gold model to its iPad lineup with the release of the next-generation iPad Air. Interestingly, the report is specific to note that the full-size model will get the color while the mini line goes without mention.

Per the report:

New versions of the company’s 9.7-inch iPads, anticipated to be unveiled this month, will include gold as a choice of color for the rear metal cover, adding to the silver and gray available for the lighter iPad Air, the people said, asking not to be identified ahead of an announcement. That brings the color palette into line with the iPhone 5s, which come with silver or gold backs for models with a white faceplate, and space gray for those with a black front.

The next-generation iPad is expected to be revealed next month. Some indications of Touch ID support have been recently discovered in iOS betas, and the new model is believed to include upgraded RAM and storage options.

What’s up with all these gold models. They’re so tacky.

    • Tell that to buyers in Asia.

Samsung & HTC’s gold is tacky, not ’s

      • houstonche - 9 years ago

        How is that?

      • I agree with you, it looks better in metal rather than Samsung’s plastic phones, the iPhone has always had a much simpler design, that helps too, plus Apple chose the right shade of golden!!!

When it comes to the HTC one, their phone design is cool but golden makes it tacky, it just does, even in blue and red, it looks ridiculous, the black and silver are cool though!

Although gold is not for me, in general, people like to have choices… not sure what the big deal is about. Any reports out there show iPhone sales by color?

      • Ray - 9 years ago

If it’s about offering choices, I would much rather see the variety of colours like the iPod nanos before and even those candy colour iMacs.

I just need that Space Grey MBA

I hope for slate black to come back

Bring back slate! Bring back slate! Bring back slate!

  3. It makes sense now! Apple is becoming more of a fashion brand with the introduction of the Apple Watch, the golden iPhone was a step towards that too. Releasing a golden version of the iPad after the novelty started wearing off makes more sense, the iPhone is Apple’s main product after all, had Apple introduced it a month after the iPhone 5s, all that golden would have been overkill or a pimp’s dream…

I can assure you that no one with any fashion sense buys the gold iPhone. The gold Apple watch, being real gold is a different thing altogether, but gold *coloured* aluminium, is just tacky. It always has been and always will be.

It actually violates some pretty basic design principles. They might as well give them a coat of paint.

      • What basic design principles does it violate?

      • piablo - 9 years ago

        LOL! File that under “opinion”.
I happen to like it, admittedly it took me a while to come around. I have a gold 6Plus with blue leather case and it looks great. Many people agree with you though. I don’t think it’s about looks, I think it’s about message. Most people want to fly under the radar, they don’t want to stand out. Black and white is a great way to do that. I would imagine if they could survey Toyota Camry owners, I bet less than 1% of them would opt for the gold version. I think the people that are offended by the gold phone, offended versus simply liking grey or white more, are responding to the ‘luxury’ nature of it. They don’t want to appear as someone who is wanting attention.

“It actually violates some pretty basic design principles.”

If that’s true… then kudos to Apple to even offering it on their flagship device.

      Don’t forget the Beats aquisition…

Bleh. If there is a more sure sign of Apple’s loss of style chops lately it’s the gold coloured devices. They’re crap, and the only reason they exist is because China.

What will happen is either they will release the new iPads with the rounded edges and bumpy camera of this years iPhone 6, (in other words boring and innovative crap), or they will move the boring needle even further back and stay with the exact same form factor they have now.

Then in a year, or maybe even two or three, they might actually come up with something innovative and new.

    • Mr. Grey (@mister_grey) - 9 years ago

      *un-innovative (damn autocorrect)

    • piablo - 9 years ago

It always amazes me to find people like yourself with such odd perceptions. You’re having some kind of emotional response to Apple, and in spite of obvious fact and reality, you publicly state that you believe they are un-innovative and their products are crap. Personally, I would be embarrassed to make such an odd and wrong statement, but some people like yourself are happy and revel in it. Bad attention is still good attention? And way hang around a forum dedicated to the something you dislike so much? Such is the life of a troll I guess…

I see Mr. Beasley, Bloomberg’s fan, is living off their news feed now. Perhaps you can name the employee that failed to pick the right shade of gold finish on a test model or perhaps let it slip that Asians like gold on things? I mean, Bloomberg and yourself have this new liking to destroy careers, so why not try embellish this one?

Great. Now all the pimps and their ladies will have an iPhone.
