Today’s 9to5mac.com/Toys deal is a two parter. First:
Amazon.com offers the D-Link 2-Bay External Network Storage Enclosure, model no. DNS-321, for $130.20. This $30 mail-in rebate cuts it to $100.20. With free shipping, that’s $12 under our December mention and the lowest total price we could find by $20. (A mail-in rebate made it a buck less in September, since expired.) This Gigabit Ethernet NAS enclosure can hold two Serial ATA hard drives of any capacity and supports RAID 1, 0, and JBOD. Rebate expires February 28.
Then continue shopping at Amazon for the $129 1.5 TB (with updated firmware) Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM Hard drive. You’ll need two.
Put them together easily at home. We recommend JBOD (Just a Bunch of Disks – spanning) because if one drive fails, you’ll still have the data on the other – and the speed of RAID 0 won’t help because of other bottlenecks in the system. But don’t worry, the system is plenty fast to play HD Movies to numerous computers/set top boxes at the same time. It is also an FTP server and iTunes music server built-in.
For those with irreplaceable data, of course mirroring is your best bet but cuts the capacity in half. Remember, this is a low cost way to have tons of data avaialble to you at home. It is by no means a corporate data solution.
