  1. Perfect timing! I was just googling for cases. Thank you.

  2. chrisl84 - 10 years ago

With the new larger screen size having a case that doesnt impede the “swipe to go back” functionality is important.

    • chrisl84 - 10 years ago

As in a high lip as seen on otter box cases could block get in the way…hands on is the only way to confirm they wont interfere

      • jwvincent2 - 10 years ago

Just picked up the Otterbox defender for iPhone 6 and the high lips are beveled so you can access the edges of the screen. Obviously not as easy as it was without the case on, but I already dropped the darn thing and proceeded to go out right away to get the defender. Call me crazy as you have below but I think the phone looks pretty bad ass in the new defender, and will look fresh every time you take it out to show it off!

      • giskardian - 10 years ago

Do you think the Otterbox Defender adds any structural reenforcement to the iPhone?

  3. Nycko Heimberg - 10 years ago

You buy the last very expensive iPhone.
    It’is beautiful but fragile.
You already think of selling it in a year.
You buy one plastic plastic case
    The World is crazy !

    • scumbolt2014 - 10 years ago

Crazy to purchase a 20-100 dollar case for a device that cost upwards of 400 dollars that will be used everyday and bumped and knocked around. Yeah, crazy.

      • Aunty Troll (@AuntyTroll) - 10 years ago

Who is crazier? The person who spends $600 on a beautiful iPhone, then hides it away behind a case which totally negates the beauty of the phone, or someone who spends $600 on a beautiful iPhone then risks dropping and damaging it? I’m in the latter camp personally – guess no matter what you do your going to be crazy.

      • Nycko Heimberg - 10 years ago

        iPhone is not 400$……
You pay every month the leasing sir;-)

      • giskardian - 10 years ago

It’s a defect of all smart phones. They are not designed to be sufficiently rugged, so they require cases. I can see one advantage in that it allows people to personalize their phones with a case, but why do we put up with expensive phones that can’t handle the rough and tumble of daily life?

    • WaveMedia (@WaveMedia) - 10 years ago

You’re buying more than just the aesthetics. Cases help to retain them and/or add individuality to them.

  4. theblacksaint24 - 10 years ago

Preferred to wait for the tech21 impact mesh. Works perfect if you look to protect your phone.

  5. Gort (@DrugstorCowboy) - 10 years ago

I’m a surfer and found a killer Hawaiian themed wooden iPhone 6 case by Carved (carved.com) that I got through an amazing company by the name of hawaiiancases.com. The one I ordered looks like a surfboard. They have a ton of really cool designs for iPhones of different generations]. I highly recommend them. Check them out. Here’s a link to what I got from their store on Zazzle.com:

    • giskardian - 10 years ago

Thanks man, those are some of the most beautiful cases I’ve ever seen.

I’m thinking making a wood case for my 6+. I could put a curved back on it so it would be easier to hold and hopefully wouldn’t set off my carpal tunnel syndrome. That takes some precise woodworking though, and I’m not sure I can do it (my dad probably could, at least when he was younger).

  6. Mr. Grey (@mister_grey) - 10 years ago

If you want to lay your iPhone down on the table and have it stable, the case is 100% *required* this year (which is why I won’t ever buy an iPhone 6).

    • luckydcxx - 10 years ago

really? you are concerned that the phone won’t be “stable” … are you expecting an earthquake to knock the phone off the table? why don’t you keep it in your pocket if you are that worried?

      • Mr. Grey (@mister_grey) - 10 years ago

No, I’m just talking about the annoyance of a phone that won’t lay flat on a table but rocks back and forth instead.

You on the other hand seem to be some kind of knee-jerk apologist. Calm down (and the 6 plus won’t fit in my pockets anyway).

      • chrisgoebel - 10 years ago

@Mister_grey – the phone does not rock back and forth on a table. That’s an assumption people made but the large size of the phone offsets that minute extension of the camera so it is a non-issue.

    • scumbolt2014 - 10 years ago

Need some cheese with your constant whine?

      • Mr. Grey (@mister_grey) - 10 years ago

Wow. Both you guys are scary obsessed. Posting this kind of stuff in response to my very mild and completely justified criticism is just crazy.

    • pecospeet - 10 years ago

My 6+ lays perfectly flat and stable in its naked state. Maybe you should check if your table is level and flat.

      • giskardian - 10 years ago

Did you grind off the protruding camera?

    • h2eternity - 10 years ago

I’m not sure where you got that information from, but my iPhone 6 lays perfectly flat on a table without any case.

    • They ARE Stable, AND the Plus fits into all pockets I’ve tried. Is your day so boring that you need to invent silly playground nonsense for a forum of adults?

    • Jim - 10 years ago

      No it’s not.

My iPhone 6, with no case, is rock solid when laying on the table screen-down. If I had sandpaper on my table top, I might think twice about putting the phone screen-down. But on “normal” tables, this is no issue for me.

On the other hand, when I place the phone back side down on a flat surface, it can move ever-so-slightly because the camera sticks out a teeny bit.

If anyone decides NOT to buy this amazing piece of tech because of this incredibly small wobble, well, there must be something else going on…

      • Johnny Slapstick - 10 years ago

Screen-down is the key here. The camera sticks out on the back. Even if it’s just a “teeny bit” it still sticks out. I’m guessing that was not Jony’s idea. He is probably cringing at the fact that the camera sticks out. Also, the camera lens has a huge potential to be damaged because of this. A case is absolutely necessary in order for this not to happen.
You might think right now after only having your phone for a couple days that it doesn’t matter, but believe me it will matter.

      • giskardian - 10 years ago

Of course it was Jony’s idea – he had to have the phone so thin that the camera wouldn’t fit without protruding. The guy’s anorexia resulted in a phone that BENDS he could add a bit of aloominium to reenforce the sides! FIRE him and hire someone who understands both form AND function.

    • It’s kind of obvious you are here for just one reason and that is to piss people off with your childish remarks. The thing is you aren’t an iPhone fan (we get that) so why do you come here pretending to be outraged by it’s pricing or it’s protruding camera or its perceived lack of features (your comment) or better yet people’s reactions to your silly comments?

I have to give you full marks for being a persistent prick but honestly it’s getting a little stale. Why don’t you try engaging in a intelligent debate? You might be surprised when people actually treat you with a little more respect.

I won’t hold my breath though.

  7. Uriah Bojorquez - 10 years ago

I ordered a Spigen Neo Hybrid, but Spigen is lagging on shipping it out. I’m super impatient, so I had to cancel it.

Only other shot-notice option was to pick up a case at my local Best Buy. I got the Platinum (Best Buy brand) wood case. Seems pretty sturdy and the build quality seems rather good. Anyone have any experience with these? Or, just the Platinum series in general?

  8. herb02135go - 10 years ago

I have a Speck case (shown on the left) on my Samsung S5, which is large.

The texture/ridges on the back make it easy to hold with one hand.
I’d recommend that if you are getting the larger version.

  9. Jaddie Dodd - 10 years ago

Does anyone know (or have a link to anyone who knows) which cases folks at Apple are using? I’d love to know which cases, if any, Jony, Tim, Eddie, Craig, and Phil chose. What about Gruber, Snell, Gemmel, Frakes, Matt Deatherage, and other member of the Mac cognoscenti? What’d they choose? I recall that at one time Gruber chose no case at all.

I’m a little disappointed in Apple’s choice of real leather for one line of its cases. If I had to choose right now, I’d go with Apple’s silicone case. It’s simple enough and looks like it offers enough protection for me.

    • Mr. Grey (@mister_grey) - 10 years ago

Gruber, Jony Ive, and Tim Cook don’t use cases, but I’m not sure about the rest. Also, some of the names on your “cognoscenti” list are way obscure and not really “cognoscenti” at all.

No one who is really into design would use a case, and Apple is chock full of exactly that type of person, so I would bet that the majority of the people on your list doesn’t use one, although the iPhone 6 having the stick out camera might induce more case usage this year.

      • WaveMedia (@WaveMedia) - 10 years ago

That and I can’t imagine Jony Ive or Tim Cook having a problem getting a replacement if it breaks from a fall lol.

      • giskardian - 10 years ago

I hope you’re right – its important for the iPhone designers to use it naked so they learn the strong and weak design points.

  10. Seifer Tan - 10 years ago

UAG (Urban Armor Gear) is a great case too

  11. Mac Daddy - 10 years ago

I’ve never liked wrapping my iPhones in cases. I usually apply the $20-$80 I would spend on a case toward the AppleCare Plus ;-)

And still, I’ve never had to make a claim. I just try to remember that my “phone” is really a $900 computer and treat it as such. Doing the same with my HP-41C in college gave me the practice, I suppose…

  12. zBrain (@joeregular) - 10 years ago

what really scares me is how the iPhone 6+ would look in a battery case. would it be as “big” as the iPad mini?

  13. I bought a Spigen Neo Hybrid and a 3 pack of Spigen Crystal screen protectors for my iPhone 6 through Amazon over the weekend. They were both delivered on Wednesday and installed easily today when my new iPhone arrived. I’m actually pretty impressed with Spigen now, as this is the first time I’ve ever purchased on of their products. The case fits well and the screen protectors are cut correctly. Apparently they determined that their button pass-through design could be better and have proacitvely come up with a fix and are shipping the modified case parts out to customers who bought the Neo Hybrid. Very impressive. I usually carry my iPhones in something much more protective (like an OtterBox Defender or a Lifeproof fre) but I wanted something lighter this time around. The double-layer protection of the Neo Hybrid so far fits the bill nicely. Only time will tell if it will hold up to daily use but I have high hopes.

  14. M - 10 years ago

Every single one of those cases is absolutely hideous.

  15. I think Apple cases are ultimately the best choice here.

  16. Allan Aunkst (@aunkster) - 10 years ago

i thought the 6 plus would almost have to have a case due to the fact the the camera lens is a bit beveled out and if layer on a table the lens would be the first part of the camera to hit the table??

  17. Having spend a cool grand for iPhone 6 Plus, I’m gonna buy the best phone protector out there? But which one?

  18. John Branum (@JDLBB) - 10 years ago

I started to order a case with an aluminum bumper but then read in several places that the metal causes signal interference. Has anyone tested this?

  19. alexmoeller - 10 years ago

    Great. Just in Time

  20. Wayne Perry - 10 years ago

Where are the Seidio cases? Or better yet, their Platinum line they produce for Best Buy. Great cases, great prices. I have been using them for years.

  21. Bryson Wooden - 10 years ago

Pelican made a couple great cases.

  22. Laurie Maxwell - 10 years ago

    What about MOSHI?

  23. Truffol (@Truffol) - 10 years ago

are those suspenders from LD West??

  24. Diane Story - 10 years ago

I got a case from OctoArmor, and it is actually pretty nice. I was planning on using it temporarily, until there were more reviews for other kinds, but this one is actually pretty good. I’m very pleased with it, and I think I’m going to keep using it for quite a while. http://amzn.to/WSRNja

  25. Kyle J. Kramer - 10 years ago

Has anybody tested the i-Blason battery case? I’ve been a Mophie ‘Juice Pack Plus’ owner for some time, and have been completely satisfied with its performance, both as a battery charger (0 to 100%, with a bit to spare), as well as its protective qualities. The almost instantaneous release, and the low price tag, of the i-Blason make me raise a suspicious eyebrow, for sure. Any helpful feedback appreciated.

  26. Jared Wagner - 10 years ago

Letf out the amCase OctoArmor case from Amazon. Found it the other day for 5$ and its great. A lot like the spigen cases for a thrid of the price. Cant beat that. The Supcase is nice too.

    • Diane Story - 10 years ago

I got that OCtoarmor case and its pretty legit. I really like how perfectly cut it is. A terrific fit

  27. Jeff Mirkin - 10 years ago

You have missed the boat–the best iPhone case I know of is the Piel Frama line of vertical flip cases…I own several now for the various phones, they are tip quality leather, have removable belt clips and are stylish and high quality.

    • giskardian - 10 years ago

Nice case! I normally don’t like cases that cover the screen, but the flip top is a sweet design. No 6+ case on their website, though.

  28. fredhans57 - 10 years ago

I would recommend getting a case because of the fact that they can bend in your pocket. There are some great options including the Spigen Slim Armor Case or the Urban Armor Gear Case, both of which are reviewed and compared on this site. These cases have proved themselves stylish and durable for the new iPhone 6 and 6 Plus.

For those of you who don’t want to cover up the loverly appearance of your phone, I suggest the i-blazon Halo clear which I think will provide ample protection most of the time. I am anxiously awaiting the delivery of my 6-plus today from my preorder and am also ordering a wallet style case (Snugg backorders vs i-blazon which I can get in 2 days) for those days when I want to toss my phone in my purse sans the risk of scratching the glass. That type of case will also function as a kick stand when wanted. And soon I hope we can leave our credit cards home with the security of Apple Pay! I hope most businesses get on board with this given all of the hacker issues lately of credit card info.

  30. Michael Jerome Hennessey - 10 years ago

GisKardian you have a great idea. If your Dad lives close ask him to help you with a design and recommend material. He could even recommend tools such as a coping saw or dremel. It would be an awesome experience you would treasure for your life. If You have young children get them envolved with the project. It will show them the respect and love you have for your father and that elderly people always have something to contribute. My Father died at 68 and my fondest memories are all the projects we did together when I was growing up. Yes I was in the way and know that as an adult but they are still very precious to me.

What do you guys think about the Aluminum Lithonic iPhone 6+ Case?

    Now on Kickstarter:

I’m waiting for the forthcoming Mobee induction charging case so I can use my Magic Feet induction charging station (since I have room to charge my Magic Mouse and another device at the same time)…..

  33. Nicolas Hochard - 10 years ago

Have you heard of Krown Case? They are fairly new but already do outstanding cases for iPhone 6. Slim brushed aluminum cases or ultra thin cases that won’t disrupt the phone’s design. http://www.krowncase.com

  34. David Kent - 9 years ago

Yeah, I totally argee with what you have said. This is an awesome artical, but I also get a good case to recommend to you.
