Apple today released a firmware update for the Mac mini to address a USB keyboard-related issue. Labeled Mac mini EFI Firmware Update 1.8, the update is intended for Apple’s previous Mac mini generation (late 2012) released before the most recent hardware refresh.
Specifically, Apple says the update “addresses an issue that may prevent a USB keyboard from being recognized after the system wakes from sleep.” Owners of the late 2012 Mac mini desktop computer can find the firmware update available in the Updates tab of the Mac App Store. The file measures in at just over 4 MB and requires a system restart or directly from Apple.com.

Now we wait patiently for a similar update for the MBPr 13. Apples current solution is to send out usb extension cords.
Should I say “thank you”? I mean, 3 years after the Mac Mini comes out, they fix a problem that should have been identified prior to launch, and if not fixed prior to launch – certainly fixed long before this. I understand that the Mac Mini isn’t their highest priority – and I ask “Why?”
Seriously, Mr. Cook, with all due respect, “Why is the Mac Mini your lowest priority?”. Of the entire Mac lineup, this entry level Mac offers those who can least afford to get into the Apple computer environment, a sample of what is available. The Mac Mini is a very well built and nimble desktop computer, that stacks up well against similarly priced Windows PC’s. Yet, it’s treated like the “red-headed child from a previous marriage”, ignored and poorly supported. Why is it that Apple took away what little upgrading the consumer could do to the Mac Mini, and soldered down the RAM? And for those with the constitution to tear apart the Mac Mini and add a second drive, Apple removed the secondary SATA plugs – so the Mac Mini is now an orphan – virtually not-upgradable from the condition from which it was purchased?
What have we, the not so affluent, Mac supporters done, to deserve this alienation?
I love my late 2012 Mac mini. It will probably be the last Mac mini that I buy since Apple decided to make it impossible to upgrade Mac minis.
