You’d be worth $27M if you’d invested in AAPL stock instead of having a kid …

Everyone knows raising kids is an expensive undertaking, but you might not appreciate quite how expensive if you compare it to buying AAPL stock. Fortunately, or unfortunately, there’s now a website for that …

The website whatifiboughtappleinstead.com lets you enter the month and year your child was born, and a few other details, to calculate the total cost of raising the kid. If then looks at what would have happened if you’d instead spent that same sum of money buying AAPL stock.

As an example, for a child born in January 1985 to an upper income family, but excluding the cost of college, you’d otherwise have been able to acquire 252,458 shares of Apple, which would today be worth $27,639,102.

It’s not realistic, of course, as it appears to look at the total sum being invested on day one, rather than over time as would really have been the case, so it’s just a bit of fun. But if your kids are ever feeling hard done by, and you want to point out how much you’ve sacrificed for them, this is the site to show them …
