While the next generation iPhones are expected to include wireless charging, Apple’s current and previous iPhone models don’t offer the convenient technology like many Android smartphones do. Let’s take a look at how add this feature to your iPhone…
In order to enable wireless charging on your iPhone, you’ll need to look to third-parties for some accessories. There are a variety of different choices, and here are some of the best options:
Qi wireless receivers
Qi is the leader in wireless charging and also formed the Wireless Power Consortium (which Apple has joined). Picking up a Qi compatible wireless receiver to add to your iPhone is the most cost-effective way to bring wireless charging to your device.
These work via a Lightning connector (typically with any model iPhone 5 and later) with a slim ribbon cable attached to the wireless charging coil that adheres to the back of your iPhone.
Keep in mind you may want to use a case to hide the receiver and using one of these makes it more difficult to use a Lightning cable to charge your phone. You’ll also need to buy some wireless charging bases if you don’t have them already.
- Qi wireless receivers for iPhone $10-$20
- Wireless charging bases from $12
