Apple reported its best fiscal third quarter yet earlier this week, with 11.6 million iPads sold within the quarter. Overall, iPad’s success isn’t enough to push the overall tablet market up however.
According to a report from IDC, worldwide tablet market sales declined a whopping 13.5% in the Q2 of 2019. Only 33 million tablets were sold within the quarter, dropping from 38.2 million from the same quarter of the previous year.
The report says that only Apple and Huawei grew in Q2, while the rest of the industry saw an overall decline. IDC cites the refreshed $329 iPad and Apple’s push into education as reasons for Apple’s success during the quarter.
Huawei remains the third largest tablet manufacturer worldwide, falling slightly behind Samsung, with a total of 3.4 million tablets sold in the second quarter. Its main market is still in Asia, which accounted for nearly 50% of the company’s shipped units.
Samsung, Apple’s largest rival in the tablet space, saw a YOY decline of 16.1%, only shipping 5 million units this quarter, compared to 6 million from the year ago quarter.
While overall tablet sales are on the decline, Apple is still clearly ahead, leading the industry with 11.6 million units shipped in the quarter. The company, as it stated in its latest earnings call, has been seeing growth in iPad sales for five quarters in a row.
