Last month, Microsoft rolled out a major update to Skype that brought features such as free HD video calls, call recording, and more. While the update was meant to replace Skype 7.0, now commonly referred to Skype Classic, Microsoft says it is extending support for Skype 7.0…
As spotted by Thurrott, Microsoft made the announcement via its support forums. The company initially intended on Skype 8.0 replacing its predecessor completely, with Skype 7.0 support ending on September 1st.
Today, however, Microsoft revealed that it will extend support for Skype 7.0 for the indefinite future due to feedback from users:
Based on customer feedback, we are extending support for Skype 7 (Skype classic) for some time. Our customers can continue to use Skype classic until then.
Thanks for all your comments – we are listening. We are working to bring all the features you’ve asked for into Skype 8.
While Microsoft has not revealed just how long Skype 7 will be supported, this decision comes as good news nonetheless for users who haven’t adapted well to Skype 8. Since its release, Skype 8 has been criticized for lacking many features of its predecessor – and users haven’t held back in their thoughts, slamming Microsoft via its support forums.
