T-Mobile targeting switchers with 30-day trials without changing carriers

Along with announcing a new approach to customer service and some perks like a free year of Pandora Plus for customers yesterday, T-Mobile is offering a new free 30-day trial program to attract new customers. Although there are a few caveats, the trial doesn’t require customers to switch carriers or numbers and is totally free.

The new offer didn’t receive any stage time at yesterday’s un-carrier event, but it is live for those in Boston, Austin, and Atlanta. The 30-day free trial gives potential customers 30GB of T-Mobile data, the fine print notes that “Video typically streams on smartphone/tablet at DVD quality (480p).”

We’re so confident that you’ll love our network that we’re giving you the exclusive opportunity to try us for free. We know how hard switching can be, which is why we designed an offer that allows you to experience our network with no hassle, completely free.

T-Mobile is able to offer the trial without having potential customers change carriers or numbers by sending out hotspot devices. While this isn’t the most convenient for use on-the-go, it’s definitely less of a hassle than going through the process of changing carriers only to find out that you want to switch back again.

From the sign-up page, the program doesn’t even appear to require a credit card for a temporary hold. The carrier is also letting people who have done the trial pass the hotspot device on to another   eligiblefriend.

This trial offer is available until the end of the year. No word yet if T-Mobile will extend the program to more cities. For more details, check out T-Mobile’s page here.
