Tom’s Guide is out today with a detailed look at the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max battery performance. While Apple didn’t spend too much time touting the battery life of each device during its event earlier this month, it did note that the iPhone XS would last 30 minutes longer than the iPhone X, and the iPhone XS Max would last 90 minutes longer.
According to Tom’s Guide, however, actual battery life is quite different. During its test, the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max were both set to 150 nits of screen brightness, with auto-brightness and True Tone turned off. The devices are then put through a continuous web surfing test.
The iPhone XS was able to last 9 hours and 41 minutes during the test, where as the iPhone XS Max lasted 10 hours and 38 minutes. This compares to the iPhone X, which lasted 10 hours and 49 minutes.
As you can see, neither the iPhone XS nor the iPhone XS Max are able to beat – or even match – the battery life offered by the iPhone X during this test.
The iPhone XS Max turned in a run time of 10 hours and 38 minutes, which is well above the smartphone category average of 9:48. However, the iPhone XS lasted for just 9:41, which is slightly below the average. Last year’s iPhone X lasted 10:49 on the same test, despite claims from Apple that the iPhone XS was supposed to last 30 minutes longer.
In comparison to Android devices, the iPhone XS beats the HTC U12+ and the LG G7 ThinQ, scoring 7 minutes under the average. The iPhone XS Max, meanwhile, scores 50 minutes above the smartphone average. Both devices are beat by the OnePlus 6, Galaxy Note 9, Pixel 2 XL, and P20 Pro.
Of course, battery life can vary dramatically depending on what you’re doing. Apple touts that the iPhone XS can last up to 12 hours during internet use, while the iPhone XS Max lasts up to 13 hours. The Tom’s Guide test shows neither device hit Apple’s claim, but that’s why Apple clarifies “up to.”
