iFixit LCD iPhone X XS screen replacement

iPhone X on left with orig. OLED display, with iFixit LCD on right

iFixit has been offering OLED screens for those who would like to tackle repairs on their own. Those go for around $100 less than what Apple charges for an official screen replacement but now, it’s started offering LCD replacement for iPhone X, XS, and XS Max. It’s an interesting downgrade from OLED but some on a budget with DIY interest might find it’s a great option.

iPhone Feature Request: Copy ‘Skip Lock Screen’ feature from Google’s Pixel 4

Face Unlock on Google’s Pixel 4 is less secure than the iPhone’s Face ID, but it does have one feature I’d like to see Apple copy: Skip Lock Screen.

Copying that would be perfectly fair, as Google has recently confirmed that it will be copying at least part of Face ID’s Require Attention feature…

Multiple camera simultaneous recording coming to iPhone XS and iPhone XR, not just iPhone 11

At its event last week, Apple previewed a new version of Filmic Pro running on the iPhone 11 Pro. It was a compelling demo, with the app able to record from multiple cameras simultaneously, like recording the front and back camera together, or filming using the new ultra-wide and standard wide cameras for additional coverage.

However, the good news is that simultaneous multi-cam sessions are not only available on the iPhone 11. The feature is also supported by the iPhone XS, iPhone XR, and the 2018 iPad Pro…

Bloomberg: Apple adding under-display Touch ID to the iPhone as soon as next year, corroborates 2020 cheaper iPhone

Apple is apparently readying a new under-display integrated Touch ID fingerprint sensor “as early as its 2020 iPhones” next fall, according to a report today from Bloomberg. The report says it would be an addition to the existing Face ID authentication and unlock system, allowing users to authenticate with either fingerprint or face biometrics.

The publication says the feature may slip to 2021. This echoes a timeframe suggested by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who said Apple would launch an iPhone with both Touch ID and Face ID in 2021.

Purported iPhone 11 benchmark suggests 1 GB additional RAM and modest CPU speed-up

buy iPhone XS

Apple’s iPhone 11 event is quite literally a week away, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t time for a few last-minute leaks. A Geekbench test result has surfaced that purports to show CPU statistics for the iPhone 11. More specifically, this is supposedly a benchmark for the “iPhone 12.1,” which is the successor to the iPhone XR.

The Geekbench score reports 5415 for single-core and 11294 for multi-core. If real, this would mean the new iPhone lineup is about 12% faster for single-core tasks, but the multi-core result is essentially unchanged compared to what the current iPhone XR scores.

Apple says 88% of all iPhones and iPads now running iOS 12, as iOS 13 release nears

Apple has today updated its iOS version statistics for developers. Apple publishes these numbers every few months based on usage traffic to the App Store.

The company says that 88% of all iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch models are now running iOS 12. That proportion rises to 90% if counting only devices released in the last four years. These are likely the final figures for iOS 12 as Apple readies iOS 13 for release next month.

Review: HiRise Wireless combines a sleek vertical iPhone stand with portable Qi charger

Hirise Wireless iPhone stand

Vertical desk stands for the iPhone have risen in popularity since the introduction of Face ID, allowing the owner to unlock the phone without taking it off the stand — the Face ID camera is pointed at just the right angle.

The HiRise Wireless approaches the classic formula with great materials and a sleek design, plus a small twist: the Qi charging pad is not fixed in place. It can be popped out and taken with you. It’s a small thing — but it really ramps up the product’s flexibility and functionality compared to the status quo.

In new ‘Nap’ TV commercial, Apple says Face ID is ‘even easier and more secure than Touch ID’

In a new ad currently available on the Apple Singapore YouTube channel, Apple takes a direct jab at Touch ID biometrics. The amusing 30-second commercial features a man sleeping on a deckchair whilst his phone, a blue iPhone XR, pings with new message notifications.

The ad shows the man opening his eyes and merely glancing at the phone to unlock the device and reveal the notifications. The ad closes with the tagline “Face ID. Even easier and more secure than Touch ID.”

iOS 13: 3D Touch’s features come to all devices, but 3D Touch itself is on the way out

iOS 13 3D Touch

There have been rumors for a while that the iPhone 11 will not include a pressure-sensitive 3D Touch screen. iOS 13 certainly supports that direction as 3D Touch gestures in iOS 13 are effectively non-existent.

The good news is that the features provided by 3D Touch, like Peek and Pop or Home Screen Quick Actions, are now available with long-press gestures. The bad news is that owners of 3D Touch phones, i.e. all iPhones since the iPhone 6s apart from the SE and the XR, lose out on functionality that existed in previous OS versions.

New report claims that the triple-camera iPhones in 2019 will feature 6.1-inch and 6.5-inch OLED screens, tweaked chassis thickness

2019 iPhone 11

Japanese Apple blog Macotakara is making some unorthodox claims this morning regarding the 2019 iPhone lineup. Previous rumors had indicated that the 2019 lineup would be direct successors to the 2018 iPhone XR, iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max.

Today’s report, citing reliable Chinese supply chain sources, suggests that in addition to spec bumps to the XR and XS, there will be two new 2019 iPhone models with 6.1-inch and 6.5-inch OLED displays. These models would be specially designed to accommodate the rumored triple-camera system.
