I’ve owned Apple’s original MagSafe charger for many years at this point, and for all of Apple’s faults with cable builds over the years, it’s held up really well. There’s been zero fraying or stripping. I suspect a lot of this is the very nature of how you connect MagSafe to a device versus plugging in a cable, but the proof is in the pudding. Apple finally upgraded the cable to support faster charging, so let’s take a look at Apple’s newest MagSafe charging cable.
MagSafe Monday: Every Monday, Bradley Chambers looks at the latest and greatest in the MagSafe and wireless charging industry to help you get the most out of your Apple devices that support wireless charging.
The “official” MagSafe Charger makes wireless charging really easy with its perfectly aligned magnets that securely attach to iPhone 12 and later. It delivers faster wireless charging up to 25W when paired with a compatible 30W or 35W power adapter. In addition to iPhones, the charger also supports Qi2 and Qi wireless charging, making it compatible with iPhone 8 or later and AirPods models with a wireless charging case.
A warning about accessories
While it functions similarly to the previous version, it’s important to note that this updated cable is not compatible with accessories that require the older cable, such as stands or car mounts. The new charging puck has a slightly smaller diameter and is thinner than its predecessor. There are many accessories designed to fit around the puck, so they’ll need to be redone to support this new cable.
Is it the best MagSafe cable?
The new MagSafe cable is likely the best option for build quality. Apple’s reputation for durable MagSafe cable construction is evident here, as the cable features incredibly strong magnets that securely snap onto your iPhone without needing constant readjustment. This ensures a consistent charge and the durability of previous versions has shown that Apple’s MagSafe cables can withstand years of use without fraying or wear. One bonus here: I LOVE the new braided cable.
However, compared to other MagSafe options, it lacks some additional features that could be important depending on your needs. Many third-party alternatives come with integrated stands or adjustable mounts that allow for easier viewing or use of your phone while charging. Those options might be more appealing if you’re looking for more versatility in terms of how and where you charge. I’ve used the ESR MagSafe puck with a stand in the past, and it’s really good.
Ultimately, the decision comes down to what you’re looking for in a MagSafe cable. If you prioritize premium build quality, durability, and strong magnetic attachment, the official Apple MagSafe cable is a great option. But if you need extra features like a built-in stand or car mount compatibility, other options might better suit your needs.
You can buy the official MagSafe charger with fast charging from Amazon in either a 1-meter or 2-meter length.
