Apple TV+ has two of its best reviewed shows of the year airing now

Apple TV+ is having a very good year, with a growing subscriber base and more critical acclaim than ever. But amid what’s otherwise been a slow season for new TV, Apple is currently airing two of its best reviewed shows of the year: Chief of War and Platonic.

#1: Chief of War

Chief of War Apple TV+

Chief of War premiered on Apple TV+ at the beginning of August as a Jason Momoa extravaganza.

Momoa not only stars in the series, but he co-created, executive produced, wrote, and even directed an episode of it. As Apple says, it’s very much a passion project for him.

The action epic currently has a strong 93% score on Rotten Tomatoes, putting it among Apple’s top series this year.

Here are some quotes from TV critics:

  • San Jose Mercury News: “Chief of War is invigorating, compelling and sweeping and also gives Momoa one of his meatiest roles yet.”
  • Financial Times: “Cut from a similar cloth to Shōgun, this grand, ambitious series deserves to call itself an epic.”
  • Empire Magazine: “Momoa’s magnum opus cuts a brutal swathe through epic chapters of Hawaiian history, long unseen and long overdue on screen”

And here’s Apple’s official summary of the series and its trailer:

Embark on an epic adventure about the origin of Hawai‘i and its people. Jason Momoa stars as Kaʻiana, a fearless warrior on a mission to unite his homeland as a monumental power struggle erupts among the four kingdoms.

New episodes will debut every Friday through September 19.

#2: Platonic

Platonic season 2 debuted last week as yet another Seth Rogen-starring comedy for Apple.

Just like The Studio did earlier this year, Platonic is earning near-universal praise from critics.

The new season currently has a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes:

  • The Age: “Platonic has become one of television’s best half-hour comedies.”
  • The Daily Beast: “Rogen and Byrne are so ideally well-paired—his ragamuffin slacker wiseassery meshing perfectly with her frazzled put-together anxiety and wannabe-cool awkwardness—that they make it TV’s most steadfast laugh-out-loud affair.”
  • Collider: “Season 2 is another winner, finding novel new challenges to test platonic dynamics and showcasing top-notch timing from every member of the team for one of the year’s best comedy TV series.”

Here’s Apple’s official summary and the trailer:

“Platonic” season two picks up with everyone’s favorite pair of best friends (Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne) as they contend with new midlife hurdles, including work, weddings and partners in crises. The duo tries their best to be each other’s rock — but sometimes rocks break things. The season two cast also includes Luke Macfarlane and Carla Gallo, and introduces Aidy Bryant, Kyle Mooney and Beck Bennett as guest stars.

Platonic will be debuting new episodes every Wednesday through October 1.

Apple TV+ is available for $9.99 per month and features hit TV shows and movies like Ted LassoSeveranceThe Morning ShowSilo, and Shrinking.
