Apple Music import tool now available worldwide, with a few exceptions

Following a limited launch late last month, Apple has now officially rolled out its Apple Music import tool worldwide, making it easier for users who want to switch from Spotify and other music platforms. Here is how it works, and where it is (and isn’t) available.

Apple began testing its Apple Music importing tool back in February, and following a limited release to users in Australia and New Zealand in May, it began rolling it out more widely last month to users in Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Mexico, the U.S., and the U.K.

Now, as noted by MacRumors, the company has updated its help page to confirm that the tool is available worldwide, with a few exceptions:

“Transferring your library and playlists to Apple Music is not available in China, Myanmar and Russia.”

How it works

The tool is available on iOS, iPadOS, Android, and the web, and it is meant to make it easy for users to import their saved music and playlists from other streaming services into Apple Music.

The first thing the user needs to do is to have an active Apple Music subscription. From there, the steps change slightly between the mobile apps and the web.

Here’s Apple’s official process to transfer to Apple Music on your iPhone, iPad, or Android:

1. Go to Music Settings:
   • On an iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > Apps > Music.
   • On an Android device, open the Apple Music app, tap the More button, then tap Settings.
2. Tap Transfer Music from Other Music Services.
3. Choose from the list of supported music services. Then sign in to the music service.
4. Choose what you want to transfer.
5. Tap Add to Library. 
6. Wait for Apple Music to find matches for your music in the Apple Music catalogue. After this process has been completed, you’ll see one of the following messages:
   • Transfer Complete: Apple Music found matches for the music in the Apple Music catalogue and added the music to your library.
   • Some Music Needs Review: Apple Music didn’t find an exact match but found similar alternative versions for the music. Tap Review Now, choose an alternative version, then tap Save to add the music to your library.

And here’s the process for transferring to Apple Music from the web:

1. On your web browser, go to music.apple.com.
2. Click Sign In and sign in with the Apple Account you use for Apple Music.
3. Click your photo or monogram in the top right-hand corner, then select Transfer Music.
4. Choose what you want to transfer.
5. Tap Add to Library. 
6. Wait for Apple Music to find matches for your music in the Apple Music catalogue. After this process has been completed, you’ll see one of the following messages in the bottom of the sidebar:
   • Transfer Complete: Apple Music found matches for the music in the Apple Music catalogue and added the music to your library.
   • Some Music Needs Review: Apple Music didn’t find an exact match but found similar alternative versions for the music. Tap Review Now, choose an alternative version, then tap Save to add the music to your library.

Apple says that there may be some differences between its music library and its competitors’, so users have “30 days from the initial transfer to review unmatched music and choose from alternate versions to add to your music library.”

The company also notes that the tool only works for playlists created by the user, rather than also for playlists created by the platform from which the user is migrating.
