AltStore announces CSAM Store Checker app, pledges donations to anti-trafficking nonprofit

AltStore developers Riley Testut and Shane Gill today announced CSAM Store Checker, an app that tracks app marketplaces where child sexual abuse material is available. Here are the details.

New app tracks app marketplaces where CSAM remains accessible

As Testut and Shane explain:

As you may have heard, over the last few weeks X and Grok have made it possible for child sexual abuse material (CSAM) to be generated and widely distributed on their apps. Both apps are in clear violation of Apple’s App Store guidelines and should have been removed from the App Store. But they haven’t been.

With that in mind, they launched CSAM Store Checker, an app that lets users check whether a specific app marketplace has apps where CSAM is accessible.

CSAM Store Checker includes reference articles to help clarify whether a specific app marketplace allows apps where CSAM is accessible, which the developers say is meant to “make it obvious which apps are the issue and which marketplaces allow those apps to be distributed.”

The developers also announced that, starting today and through February, they will donate their Patreon earnings in full to Protect All Children from Trafficking (PACT).

Here are Shane and Testut:

PACT is a wonderful organization that’s dedicated to eliminating the sexual exploitation and trafficking of children. They have a CSAM Prevention Program which provides a safe space for parents, caregivers, and guardians to learn about the basics of human trafficking and exploitation and in 2024 helped pass the REPORT Act which strengthens legal obligations for Big Tech companies to detect, report, and prevent online child exploitation.
