Users will soon be able to mark messages as spoilers, so their content isn’t immediately visible to recipients. Here are the details.
WhatsApp to add ‘Spoiler’ as formatting option
As spotted by WABetaInfo, the latest TestFlight build of WhatsApp includes references to a feature that will let users mark messages as spoilers.
WABetaInfo says the feature “is currently in development and not yet available for beta testing,” but reports on how it is most likely going to work once it’s released.
According to the report, the spoiler formatting option will appear alongside tools like Bold, Italic, and Strikethrough. When selected, it will cover the text with a gray bar that recipients will need to tap to reveal.

Syntax-wise, the Spoiler formatting option adds two pipes to the selected message or words, so users will also be able to simply enter ||double pipes before and after|| the content they want to hide, rather than always needing to invoke the formatting pop-up.
In addition, WABetaInfo says that while the feature is still under development for text content, there is “no information on whether it will be made compatible with other message types, such as images”.
As is usually the case with references found in beta builds of WhatsApp, it is hard to say exactly when the feature will be officially released.
However, given that it is also currently being tested on WhatsApp’s Android beta, users likely won’t have to wait that long to ███████.
