ChatGPT user base surges 350% in 18 months as it nears 1 billion weekly active users

OpenAI is well on its way to reporting 1 billion weekly active ChatGPT users. The company today claims 900 million weekly active users, a 350% increase since just 18 months ago.

More than 5% of weekly active users are paid consumer subscribers, the company adds.

ChatGPT is where people start with AI, with more than 900M weekly active users, and we now have more than 50 million consumer subscribers. Subscriber momentum accelerated meaningfully to start the year, with January and February on track to be the largest months for new subscribers in our history. People use ChatGPT to learn, write, plan, and build. As usage scales, the product improves in ways people feel immediately: faster responses, higher reliability, stronger safety, and more consistent performance.

Just a year and a half ago, OpenAI passed the 200 million weekly active users mark for the first time.

Since August 2024, ChatGPT has gained direct integration with Siri through iOS 18 and iOS 26.

AI chatbots in general have taken the world by storm, of course, to the point that even Apple is expected to change course and pivot Siri into some form of AI chatbot in iOS 27.

While Apple started its system-level AI adoption with an OpenAI partnership, the company has since made a deal with Google to use Gemini as the brains behind a more personal version of Siri and Apple Intelligence coming as soon as iOS 26.5.

Apple has also opened up Xcode to agentic coding with the help of Anthropic and OpenAI tools.
