WhatsApp rolling out Liquid Glass revamp to its Mac app

WhatsApp is now rolling out its Liquid Glass redesign to the Mac app, bringing it closer to the iPhone and iPad versions. Here are the details.

WhatsApp brings Liquid Glass to its Mac app

To say that WhatsApp’s rollout of the Liquid Glass redesign has been a long time coming would be an understatement. The company’s first tests with Liquid Glass on iOS began last October, but an official wider rollout kicked off just two months ago.

On its Mac app, WhatsApp started adapting a few UI elements last month, drawing many cues from the Liquid Glass redesign already underway for iPadOS.

Now, as spotted by WABetaInfo, WhatsApp appears to have begun a wider rollout of its Liquid Glass redesign on Mac. According to the website, the app’s latest Mac App Store update introduces a redesigned sidebar, along with updated chat bar and attachment menu elements.

The update also adds dedicated sidebar sections for locked chats and communities. Previously, Locked chats appeared within the main chat list on Mac. Now, they require authentication before they can be accessed, bringing the experience in line with the iPhone app. Meanwhile, Communities can now be accessed directly from the sidebar instead of through the chat list.

The update closes the design difference between desktop and mobile apps. WhatsApp released Liquid Glass on iPhone first, then on iPad, and Mac is now catching up. All three platforms now follow the same design language that Apple set with its latest operating systems. WhatsApp worked toward this consistency for almost a year, and the Mac update is what finally closes the circle.

As usual with WhatsApp rollouts, however, WABetaInfo notes that the new Mac app interface is only available to a limited number of users, and “should become available to more accounts over the coming weeks.”
