WhatsApp is rolling out one-on-one and group voice and video calls on the web today, along with support for transferring calls between devices and more. Here are the details.
Voice and video calls rolling out on WhatsApp Web
Earlier this year, WhatsApp began adding support for voice and video calls to its web platform, ahead of an early trial for beta testers last month.
Today, the company is launching web calls more broadly through a gradual rollout that WhatsApp tells 9to5Mac will soon reach all users.
This means that starting today, WhatsApp Web users will be able to make and receive one-on-one and group audio and video calls, just like on the WhatsApp app for iPhone, iPad, and desktop.
Today also marks the rollout of call transfer, which lets users seamlessly transfer their ongoing calls between devices and the web without hanging up.
Web-based WhatsApp calls also support the waiting room option, allowing hosts to control who joins a call and when. To use it, hosts must enable the “Require approval to join” setting when setting up the call.
Additionally, WhatsApp says it recently improved QuickHD, allowing users to “enjoy high-definition video immediately in the very first few seconds of the call.” Paired with the recently added in-call controls for Voice Isolation and Wide Spectrum on iPhone, the change should further improve call quality across the platform.
