iPhone 18 Pro Max vs Pro: Here’s how Apple will differentiate models

iPhone 18 Pro will be unveiled soon, and rumors indicate the Pro Max model could have unique advantages this year in a key area or two. Here’s what to expect.

iPhone 18 Pro Max to have bigger battery gains this year, with possible camera advantage too

Historically, Apple has kept its Pro line fairly consistent in terms of the features it offers each year.

Besides the obvious Pro Max advantages—larger screen and longer battery—there’s sometimes also an exclusive camera feature.

This year with iPhone 18 Pro, rumors indicate Apple will continue to follow that playbook.

Battery life on iPhone 18 Pro Max was always going to be better than iPhone 18 Pro. But per recent regulatory leaks, it sounds like that will prove more true than ever.

Here’s an overview of leaked battery capacities compared to last year’s specs, for eSIM models:

  • iPhone 18 Pro Max: 5567mAh
  • iPhone 18 Pro: 4288mAh
  • iPhone 17 Pro Max: 5088mAh
  • iPhone 17 Pro: 4252mAh
Battery life

As you can see, iPhone 18 Pro Max will have a battery that’s about 10% larger than its predecessor. iPhone 18 Pro’s battery, meanwhile, is almost identical to iPhone 17 Pro.

Both new models should have better battery life thanks to efficiency gains from A20 Pro and the C2 modem. But if you’re on the fence about which model to choose, iPhone 18 Pro Max will have a bigger than usual battery advantage.

One downside of a bigger battery is that the device will also be heavier relative to iPhone 18 Pro.

Another potential difference involves camera features. Hopefully both Pro models offer the same feature set. But last fall, a reputable leaker mentioned that the forthcoming variable aperture system might be Pro Max-exclusive.

We haven’t heard that corroborated by other sources. But Mark Gurman says this will be an especially big year for camera upgrades, so it’s certainly possible Apple will reserve at least one change for its larger, pricier model.
