Here’s how iPhone Duo treats apps not optimized for the foldable display

Apple has officially announced the iPhone Duo, its first foldable display device. Additionally, the company has detailed how third-party apps will work with the larger display. This includes three modes for apps that target iOS 26, iOS 27.0, and iOS 27.1.

As mentioned, there are three compatibility modes with iOS apps for iPhone Duo.

First, there’s the default compatibility mode that apps will use before being updated for iOS 27.0. It fits the single app view in a safe area around a black background.

For apps updated for iOS 27, the default mode takes advantage of much more of the iPhone Duo display. Here’s how it looks:

There’s still blank space not being used, but it’s a lot better than pre-iOS 27 apps.

Then there’s the full compatibility mode. iPhone Duo arrives in October, and by then, we’ll have iOS 27.1 as well. Apps made for iOS 27.1 will take full advantage of the iPhone Duo display.

Apple’s apps and third-party apps that want to offer the best experience for iPhone Duo will use this style.
